Cannon Green is a landmark refurbishment in the heart of London’s financial district, transforming a dated 1960s office into a modern, mixed-use development.
Our engineering team led the structural engineering, working in close collaboration with John Robertson Architects. The project delivered 90,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, a 20,000 sq ft gym, and a 5,000 sq ft bar and restaurant. A standout feature is the double-height glazed entrance with a dramatic, geometrically complex fair-faced concrete staircase. Innovative analysis and a hybrid concrete-steel solution allowed for a slender sawtooth-profile stair visible from the façade. Further value engineering ensured minimal structural strengthening was required to accommodate new loads, optimising both cost and sustainability. The result is a dynamic, high-performance building that maximises usable space while celebrating its structural expression.

A striking transformation in the City of London, Cannon Green blends structural innovation with architectural vision - from slender concrete staircases to optimised reuse of the existing frame - creating a vibrant, award-winning workspace with gym, restaurant and modern offices.
Engineering Innovation
Civic deployed advanced modelling tools including Tekla and Revit to overcome complex geometries and structural challenges. The team’s analysis enabled a seamless fusion of new steel frames and existing concrete structures, achieving programme and cost efficiencies while preserving architectural intent.

Civic fully understood our project brief from the outset and worked very creatively to form the structural gymnastics, in order to push the existing building’s envelope to ensure we delivered the maximum amount of lettable commercial space and uses throughout the building, without compromising our high expectation of design.
