Social Value
We work to inspire the next generation of built environment system thinkers, giving back through knowledge share and creating career curiosity in young minds.

Through our education and community outreach, we are encouraging the next generation of built environment professionals and inspiring the future city makers, so they understand and feel inspired to play their part in creating a positive, lasting legacy for the people, places and planet of tomorrow.
Social value is intrinsic to our conscience at Civic and to exploring ways that we can do more to contribute to the greater good and use our skills, knowledge, passion and people to inspire.
All our studios offer work experience opportunities to secondary school and university students, invaluable opportunities that feature a structured timetable and a Civic ‘buddy-up’. This experience helps young people to understand the depth and breadth of roles available, the opportunities within the built environment career ecosystem and what choices they need to make to further pursue them.

We are equally passionate about working with schools, education and STEM charities to help bring all the services we offer to life as a career choice for children and to help inform teachers about the possibilities and routes in, to advocate them to their pupils.
Our team visit primary and secondary school events to promote the sector, and set accessible design challenge exercises, such as design your perfect playground.
Our STEM activities for older pupils include attending careers fairs, taking part in mock interview days and providing opportunities to shadow our people in a working environment to see for themselves what day-to-day life in the built environment is about. Support also extends to university students by acting as mentors, tutoring, setting university projects and offering practical support and guidance.

We offer a number of paid internships usually in the summer months to students from the UK and abroad. Typically between 6-8 weeks, they are designed to complement a student’s studies with practical experience. Our interns are assigned a line manager and mentor and are quickly immersed into our teams.
We work with universities to offer placement opportunities for undergraduate students as part of their degree. Again students are fully supported from day one and assigned a line manager and mentor, with regular progress reviews to ensure the student is supported and getting as much exposure to all parts of Civic, to create a rounded experience.
I have had an amazing time at Civic. I have learnt so much and met amazing people and had opportunities that I would not get at any other company. I think the people are what really bring Civic to life, and everyone is so friendly and always happy to help. I hope to work with Civic again throughout my career.

In addition, we also offer ways in to Civic through non-academic routes, apprenticeships, work experience placements and accessible internships to help enhance social mobility with early career opportunities.
We also partner with external organisations such as Regeneration Brainery, an award-winning social mobility programme that helps young people access pathways into property and regeneration careers, by providing bootcamps, mentoring and industry placements to support them to take a step into the industry.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Civic, as I was able to contribute to real projects and work on a variety of different tasks. It was great to see what life as a structural engineer looks like and to be able to apply knowledge that I gained at university into real projects. I am grateful for the support I have received from the team, as I could always ask questions, which allowed me to develop tremendously.
