Civic Gareth Atkinson

I’m an engineer and urbanist leading Civic’s London studio, where I oversee civil and structural engineering across projects ranging from sustainable retrofits to large-scale regeneration and public realm improvements. As a passionate advocate for sustainable design, I chair the New London Architecture (NLA) Net Zero Expert Panel, working with leaders across the built environment to define London’s path to Net Zero and the role our industry must play. I also co-founded the Engineers ReUse Collective, promoting reuse and circular economy principles in construction.

I enjoy teaching at the University of Cambridge, where I lecture to the post graduate Built Environment Leaders in Sustainability course, and the University for the Creative Arts, where I help architectural students get to grips with structural form. I champion freehand sketching as a vital way to explore and communicate engineering ideas.

Beyond the studio, I’m an avid traveller. Early in my career, I explored architecture and environments around the world. These days, I prefer train journeys and road trips across Europe with my family. To stay active, I cycle and have completed the 1,000-mile Cycle to Mipim (London to Cannes) several times. It’s a transformative experience, forging lifelong friendships and raising meaningful funds for charity through Club Peloton.
