Stepping through Manchester’s hidden history
Last month, our archaeology & built heritage team invited guests to step back through Manchester and Salford’s history, from the Middle Ages, Medieval era to the Industrial Revolution.
Hosted by @Ollie, director, and @Graham, associate director in our archaeology & heritage team, the tour brought to life the many layers of history that sit beneath our feet.
The tour included highlights such as the Hanging Ditch Bridge (one of the oldest still-standing pieces of Manchester’s Middle Ages), stories of Elizabeth Raffald, English author, innovator and entrepreneur, and the works of Friedrich Engels on the working conditions of Manchester during the Victorian era. Fun fact, we provided structural advice for the installation of the Friedrich Engels statue on First Street in Manchester!
Between them, Ollie and Graham have an incredible breadth of knowledge of Manchester and Salford, including first-hand experience of many of the excavations over the last 20 years that have uncovered new discoveries about the city’s past.
It was a chance to explore some of those stories, and to see how archaeology and built heritage can help us understand places today and become an asset for their future.
We're excited to host another tour soon!
