Director of Archaeology & Built Heritage

Ollie Cook

Hi I’m Ollie, Director of Civic Heritage.

I grew up in Norfolk, where I took a course as a teenager in excavation and recording, which inspired me to pursue it at degree level.

I studied the Institute of Archaeology (University College London) graduating with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology. After completing my degree, I volunteered in Turkey, excavating at Tel Hatay, in the Amuq Valley. I then worked on a large-scale excavation in the City of London. I subsequently moved to Manchester, where I've been working and living since. Throughout my career, I’ve been able to excavate a wide range of sites across the UK, highlights have been digging on several medieval castles. Being based in Manchester, I’ve developed an interest in industrial archaeology – particularly exploring industrial sites and how they operated.

Outside of work, I enjoy excursions to the countryside and the coast, especially if there’s a tearoom along the way.
