A major transformation project in Stretford, reconnecting local communities and enabling sustainable travel through a people-centred redesign of the Town Centre.

The centre of Stretford is being redeveloped, by replacing the existing underperforming 1960s mall with a new town centre retail, leisure and residential development, as well as a green biodiversity corridor and ‘Central Park’. With both sustainability and the high street at the heart of the masterplan, the plans centre around creating people-friendly spaces and new pedestrian routes into and around the town centre, to enhance the flow of footfall around the area. Whilst creating 800 new homes.

Our engineers were appointed by Bruntwood to develop the Stretford Town Centre Masterplan alongside Fielden Clegg Bradley, Exterior Architecture and Avison Young which was granted planning in 2022. In conjunction with the Masterplan we were appointed by Trafford Borough Council to work on the Area Action Plan (AAP) where Stretford sought to reconfigure some of the major roads through the town centre, providing safe active travel routes, new planting and reducing the area dedicated to the movement of vehicles.

Our transport and movement team developed a car parking and access strategy for the masterplan, focusing on the design considerations required to achieve a development which prioritises sustainable transport and low-car lifestyles, and improves the connections between the development and the surrounds.

Stretford Kingsway project demonstrates how people-first design and integrated infrastructure can reconnect communities, encourage active travel, and meet both environmental and social goals in urban regeneration.

Our civil and engineers and geoconsultancy team are working with FCB and Re-form to develop the new public realm and central park for the Mall site, along with SuDS design, access and parking strategies for the Mall site. We are also providing site clearance, site investigation earthworks, drainage diversions and new sewer design.

Redeveloping Kingsway

Kingsway a previously a four-lane, car-dominated corridor severing communities, was redesigned as a people-first, green street through Future High Street Funding. The new design complete in 2024 prioritise active travel with widened footways, dedicated cycle lanes and safer pedestrian crossings. Integrating extensive SuDS features including linear raingardens and filter drains, transforming impermeable surfaces into biodiverse green infrastructure. These contribute to flood resilience, improved air quality, and urban cooling - while enhancing the visual and ecological quality of the area.

Our engineers provided civil, transport, services, using ground investigations to inform sustainable reuse of existing pavement and drainage infrastructure, reducing embodied carbon and costs. The project is closely coordinated with the adjacent Stretford Mall redevelopment and shaped by public consultation to create an inclusive, accessible and community-focused public realm.
