Piccadilly Gardens has been at the heart of Manchester for generations. As the city has evolved, so has one of its most recognisable public spaces.

That's why our appointment on the project will support its next chapter, bringing together specialists from across Civic, including civil engineering, structures, geoconsultancy, environment and sustainability, building services engineering, archaeology and built heritage.

For us, this is system thinking in action.

Creating a greener, more resilient city centre means understanding how people use the space, how rainwater moves through it, how biodiversity can be enhanced, how heritage can be respected and how the Gardens can continue to serve Manchester for decades to come.

Paul Morris, director and head of our North studio, explains:

“Piccadilly Gardens is one of many projects where teams from across Civic are working collaboratively to create lasting value. As a Manchester-based team, we understand the role the Gardens play in the city. Through embracing the Gardens’ heritage, reusing materials and features where possible, and harnessing the new planting to manage surface water, provide cooling and promote biodiversity, we have an opportunity to create a richer, more welcoming and climate-resilient public space for future generations”

A public consultation on the proposals is now open until 15th July, with opportunities to view the plans, meet the team and share feedback.
