York Central hits significant milestone

City of York Council has granted detailed planning consent for the opening phase of York Central, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of a new 110-acre neighbourhood around York station. 

Being brought forward by McLaren Regeneration and Arlington Real Estate, York Central will transform a significant area of previously underused land into a new part of the city, with homes, workspaces, public spaces and community uses alongside new connections to York’s existing neighbourhoods and transport network. 

Our transport & movement team in Leeds has been supporting the project over the last year, advising on how people will move through and around the development and helping to embed walking, cycling and sustainable transport within the proposals. 

Supporting sustainable movement 

York Central’s location next to York station provides a strong foundation for a low-car approach to movement and parking. Our team has supported the development of this approach, considering how the site’s excellent public transport connections can help encourage more sustainable choices. 

The team has also advised on the design of walking and cycling routes through the new Station Square, helping to create clear and appealing connections between the station, the new development and the wider city. 

Alongside movement, Civic has developed a service and waste strategy for the scheme, including an innovative underground refuse system designed to support the practical operation of the new neighbourhood while reducing the impact of waste collection on the public realm. 

York Central represents a major opportunity to create a well-connected new neighbourhood within the city of York, with movement playing an important role in how people experience and interact with the development.
