Gabby O Reilly Associate Earth Environment team

With more than 15 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering, Gabby joins from Geosyntec, bringing specialist knowledge of complex ground conditions and large-scale infrastructure projects.

Her work includes planning ground investigations, developing detailed ground models and assessing geohazards to help understand and manage the risks associated with building on and working with the ground.

For Gabby, that understanding of what lies beneath the surface is a big part of what makes the work so interesting.

“I’ve always been fascinated by what happens beneath our feet and the role geotechnical engineering plays in shaping the places we live and work,” she says. “What attracted me to Civic is its understanding of the built environment as one system, and the connection between the ground, the environment and the places we create.

“I’m excited to bring my experience to a team that shares that way of thinking, and to contribute to Civic’s ambition to leave the earth in a better condition than when we found it.”

Connecting the ground to the bigger picture

Ground conditions have a significant influence on how places are designed, built and adapted. Understanding them early can help manage risk, make better use of materials and support more resilient places.

At Civic, Gabby works alongside colleagues across civil and structural engineering, transport, building services, sustainability, environment, archaeology, built heritage and placemaking. Bringing these areas of expertise together helps the team understand how decisions about the ground connect with the wider environment and the people who use a place.

Gabby has already contributed to projects including Piccadilly Gardens and the Wythenshawe regeneration with Muse, supporting Civic’s growing work across the North.

Julian Broster, co-founder and chief operating officer at Civic, says: “Gabby brings a wealth of specialist geotechnical experience, alongside a strong understanding of the challenges that can arise from complex ground conditions.

“Her appointment comes at a time when the links between climate resilience, ground conditions and healthier places are becoming increasingly important. We’re seeing growing demand for our services across the North, and strengthening the team means we can bring greater depth of expertise to the challenges our clients face.

“She’s already made a valuable contribution to our work, and we’re really pleased to have her experience on board as the team continues to grow.”

Growing our Earth and Environment team

Gabby’s appointment is part of the continued growth of Civic’s Earth and Environment team, following the appointment of Aisling Wallace as principal ecologist and Kirsty Poore’s promotion to director of earth.

The team’s growing geoconsultancy service brings together geologists, engineers and environmental scientists to explore the connections between soil function, material reuse, soil health and biodiversity.

This work is increasingly important as the built environment responds to climate change, seeks to use resources more effectively and creates places that support healthier lives.

Across the North, Civic is contributing to projects including Mayfield regeneration, the Old Trafford regeneration framework, York Central, Liverpool Central Docks and Oldham regeneration, bringing its system thinking approach to the challenges and opportunities shaping places.
