Welcoming Nick Langdon as strategic adviser to our geoconsultancy and earth team
We’re proud to have appointed Nick Langdon as a strategic adviser, bringing extensive technical expertise to the team.
We’re proud to have appointed Nick Langdon as a strategic adviser to our growing geoconsultancy and earth team.
Nick brings almost 50 years’ industry experience as a geotechnical consultant, having worked for multiple major UK consultancies and in academia. He was formerly owner director and company chairman at geotechnical consultancy CGL (Card Geotechnics Limited), having worked for the business for 27 years.
During that time, Nick played a pivotal role in developing CGL’s growth strategy and as a champion for equal opportunities, leading the business to receive accolades for Diversity Champion at the NCE Awards and an Investors in People Gold Award under his stewardship.
Alongside his specialisms in leadership and strategy, Nick has extensive technical expertise, including in foundation engineering, ground movement analysis and geoenvironmental engineering. He has supported structural and civil engineers across a broad range of projects, from tall building developments to major transport and infrastructure schemes and large-scale regeneration. This included working with our team on the large scale retrofit and expansion at Pinewood and Shepperton Studios in Surrey, which has created the second largest film studio in the world.
In his role here at Civic, Nick will bring considerable experience to help further strengthen the breadth of geoconsultancy skills in our team and scale our presence across the UK and Ireland.
It’s the latest addition to our earth and geoconsultancy team, following the appointment of Joe Foster, senior engineer in Manchester; Amrit Rai, senior engineer in London; and Bethany Douglas, engineer in Glasgow.
Dan Matthews, director of earth and geoconsultancy here at Civic, said: “Nick’s geoconsultancy experience and network is truly impressive, and he’s known for his commitment to championing equality and diversity, and empowering people. His focus on having a positive impact aligns with our own and we’re pleased to welcome him aboard to support the continued development of our team, which continues to grow across the UK and Ireland.”
Nick added: “It’s all about people. That’s the ethos that underpins Civic, and one that is very familiar to me. Civic’s reputation for supporting people to do their best is exceptional and is what first attracted me to work with Dan and the team.
“There are many opportunities ahead in the future for skilled teams that provide high-quality geoconsultancy services like at Civic. The challenge, as always, is raising the awareness of the value and positive impact of geoconsultancy, not only from a commercial point of view, but for the significant positive impact it can have in terms of sustainability, biodiversity and for people and place. Dan and the team are at the forefront of that effort to accelerate change, and I look forward to supporting them to have even greater reach across the UK and Ireland.”
Nick’s appointment follows a strong period of growth for our geoconsultancy and earth team. Some of our recent projects include:
- Developing a ground model and managing site investigation phases for the Sister masterplan, the new innovation district and neighbourhood in Manchester. Working alongside our civil, structural, transport, movement and archaeology teams on the project
- Delivering site investigation for Oldham Council’s Civic Centre, the first step in the plans to transform the town centre
- Providing geo-environmental engineering consultancy services for the transformational £65m Blackpool Multiversity, a state-of-the art higher education campus
- The Mayfield development in Manchester, the home of the city’s first new park in 100 years
