We are the Lead Consultant on the redevelopment of this ambitious new Waterfront Park at Hodson Bay, Athlone, delivered for Roscommon County Council in partnership with Waterways Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, to transform the shoreline into an ecologically sensitive, accessible, and tourism‑enhancing destination.

The development comprises four core components:

  • A continuous promenade along the shoreline
  • Enhancement and extension of the existing Waterways Ireland marina, including provision for 50 new berths
  • Improved facilities for water‑based activities such as boating and swimming which includes the redevelopment of the pavilion
  • And a revised access strategy promoting sustainable movement, increased pedestrian space, rationalised parking, reduced vehicle presence, and overall improved connectivity, including links to the Lough Ree Greenway.

The promenade will integrate the expanded marina and the redeveloped watersports pavilion, alongside new public realm features such as boardwalks and plaza spaces. The project also prioritises ecological sensitivity, sustainable drainage, and balanced tourism development aligned with the Shannon Tourism Masterplan 2020–2030 and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands Regional Development Strategy 2023 – 2027.

The watersports pavilion on the site features three core buildings and a small roofed plant room. One of the proposed buildings is a long, curved steel-framed moment frame structure with a timber roof which will house the on-site changing facilities, including WC amenities. There will also be a café on site, which will be available all year round and a seasonal activity centre where the equipment for the watersports will be kept. The building for the activity centre will also have office space for the staff on site.

Alongside our design and consultancy services, we are also leading in the preparation of a monthly public‑facing newsletter that shares updates on progress, design intent, upcoming engagement events, and key project milestones.
