Head of Ecology / Technical Director

Any Studio

We’re excited to offer a unique opportunity to help establish and lead a new UK-wide Ecology team at Civic. We're looking for a talented, collaborative, and purpose-driven Ecologist who wants to make a real difference – someone who believes that sustainable design is not just a nice-to-have, but essential.

At Civic, nature is central to our thinking. Our Environmental and Sustainability team works across sectors to shape places that are climate-conscious, biodiverse, and people-friendly. This new ecology team will help drive that impact even further.

We’re hiring at Associate-to-Associate Director level, and you’ll play a leading role in shaping and growing our ecological services and team from the ground up. You’ll already have a strong track record in consultancy, with experience spanning multiple sectors, team management, and client leadership.

This is more than a job – it's a chance to lead with purpose, influence the future of sustainable development, and build something new that reflects your values.

Key elements of the job

  • Lead and Grow the Team – Recruit, mentor and support a national team of ecology professionals.
  • Win and Deliver Work – Shape new opportunities with our existing clients and grow your own networks.
  • Develop Our Ecology Services – Bring fresh ideas and expand our offer across BNG, habitat and protected species surveys, biodiversity monitoring, and EIAs.
  • Deliver High-Quality Projects – Manage and oversee ecology projects across all stages, ensuring technical excellence and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate Across Civic – Work closely with our wider team—planners, designers, sustainability and heritage consultants—to embed ecology in everything we do.
  • Innovate and Inspire – Stay on top of emerging trends and bring forward innovative, nature-based solutions.
  • Share Your Expertise – Produce insightful advice and guidance to clients, partners and colleagues alike.

Key Skills / Competencies

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or similar.
  • Brings consultancy experience including team leadership and project management.
  • Combines technical depth with commercial awareness, confident in navigating contracts and client needs.
  • Communicates with clarity and empathy, inspiring colleagues and clients alike.
  • Is passionate about making a tangible difference for people and nature.

You may already be chartered – or working towards it. Either way, we’ll support your continued professional development.

Is this you?

You’ll be a natural leader – whether you’re stepping up into your first associate role or already managing multidisciplinary teams, you’ll bring energy, empathy, and a passion for collaboration.

We’re known for doing great work, and for building a culture where people feel valued, supported, and excited about the future.

This role is about more than technical delivery. It’s about influencing outcomes, nurturing talent, shaping culture, and being part of a team that is driven by purpose as much as by performance

More than just a rewarding experience!

Alongside an outstanding work environment, we offer:

  • A market competitive salary (regularly reviewed, revised and updated)
  • Flexible, Hybrid Working (Our Better Normal model of work can be as unique as you are!)
  • Chartership support

Small steps to a great journey!
