Northern Lead Associate Geotechnical/Geoenvironmental Engineer
Manchester, Leeds
As an Associate geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineer, you will be a highly experienced and effective engineer, able to lead and coordinate a team of engineers. In this role, you will also act as the Northern Lead, responsible for coordinating and supporting our existing team members across the North and ensuring consistent, high-quality delivery.
You will oversee the delivery of a variety of projects across the UK, across a range of sectors including residential, education and commercial development and regeneration. You will have the opportunity to work alongside industry experts and high-profile private and public-sector clients and collaborators.
You will have effectively managed a team of engineers in the efficient and successful delivery of multiple projects concurrently. You will have also supported the Associate Directors and Director teams in their duties including workload and people management, business development and bidding.
Business development will be a regular part of your role. You will be conscious of the potential for repeat work with clients and collaborators through your team’s impressive project delivery. You will have developed your own network of industry contacts and maintain them, aiming to bring in new business opportunities. You will have developed an overview of other disciplines within Civic and be comfortable representing the practice at meetings with external parties discussing and selling these services..
Key elements of the job
Technical
- Overseeing engineering design
- Identifying problems and opportunities, directing others to assess and resolve problems using qualitative and quantitative measures, and supervising others to do so
- Coordinating and reviewing the production of high-quality drawings, presentations and written reports on a range of projects.
- Self-checkingand checking others’ work.
- Overseeing preparation and presentation of technical data
- Overseeing the effective use of analysis and modelling software for design.
- Conducting internal reviews of projects
- Compliance with the duties of Designer, Contractor and Principal Contractor under the CDM Regulations 2015, when required
- Compliance with the practice QMS, including self-checking
Managerial
- Leading multiple projects concurrently: understanding, and where necessary negotiating, overall programmes, project deliverables, resources and associated fees both at the start and managing changes throughout project lifetimes.
- Liaising regularly with the Project Directors and client via meetings, phone calls and general correspondence; managing expectations and feeding any significant matters arising back to directors.
- Project resource allocation and forward planning to ensure project deliverables are met.
- Managing, mentoring and developing members of the team.
- Team & project financial and commercial awareness
- Contribution to overall business analysis, planning and strategy
Business Development
- Assisting the Associate Directors and Directors with leading your team’s BD, including attending and representing at internal BD reporting meetings.
- Developing and maintaining a strong industry network
- Building a strong rapport with existing clients, through project delivery and high standards of communication.
- Identification of opportunities, discussing and agreeing strategies for pursuing them with directors.
- Business development activities including general networking, 121s with contacts and attendance at industry events both internal and external. Note these often occur out of normal business hours.
- Writing bids and fee proposals and following these up to convert opportunities

Is this you?
- A degree in Geotechnical or Geovironmental engineering or Geology
- Chartered with the GSL, ICE or SocEnv, or similar
- Excellent relevant design office experience across a wide range of sectors and project size.
